Chinese Government Publishes the Demonstration Project Bid Award list of Solid State Lighting Applications, Raising Expectations for Its LED Domestic Market The Chinese central government has recently held a large-scale open bidding for LED lighting products. The National Development and Reform Commission, Ministry of Housing, and Urban-Rural Development Commission and Ministry of Transport conducted the tender evaluation together and published the bid award list on November 24th, 2010. 

Few lawmakers have more influence in the nation’s capital than 17-term Missouri Congressman Ike Skelton, the powerful chairman of the House Armed Services Committee. Representing a district mostly of small towns and rural communities, and having national security on top of his agenda, it is no surprise that in recent years he has co-sponsored or debated for proposals to help make America more energy-independent.

During the past few years, there was an expectation in the industry for LED to replace all traditional lighting; therefore the projection of the market size was huge. For example, there are 800,000 units of mercury vapor street lamps in Taiwan that needed to be replaced. Taking into account the high pressure sodium lamps, more than 1.5million lamps have yet to be replaced, in Taiwan alone.

With the official opening of Oak Ridge National Laboratories ZEBRAlliance project, Seoul Semiconductor (CEO Mr. Chung Hoon Lee, www.seoulsemicon.com) demonstrated how LEDs can help illuminate and define a home’s living area using a fraction of the energy consumed by traditional incandescent and compact fluorescent light bulbs.

Veeco Instruments Inc. announced that it has agreed to sell its Metrology business to Bruker Corporation (Nasdaq: BRKR), a leading provider of high-performance scientific instruments and solutions for molecular and materials research, for $229 million in cash. The transaction has been approved by the Board of Directors of both companies and is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2010, pending regulatory review and subject to customary closing conditions.

To learn more about Cree’s plan in the China market, LEDinside has recently visited Guoqing Tang, Cree’s General Manager of Business Development in China. During our interview, Tang emphasized that Cree pays great attention to the local China market and that “Cree chips for China” will be an important localization goal in 2010.

Based on statistics from LED industry research institute LEDinside, Taiwan’s listed LED manufacturers recorded total revenue of NT$6.852 billion in November 2009, down by 1.7% from NT$6.974 billion in October (+65% YoY). LED chipmakers’ total revenue amounted to NT$3.2 billion, up by 1.6% MoM, and LED packagers posted NT$3.652 billion in revenue, a 4.5% MoM decline.

Japan is the birthplace of LED outdoor lighting including LED ambient lights, LED night safety street lights, which help to reduce crime, and other novel lighting fixtures.

In order to complete the Primax product portfolio and fulfil the lighting market demand, DOMINANT is now extending this series with a high Color Rendering Index (CRI) product in a 0.5-Watt white version, the NAW-BSC. This high CRI LED is compliant to the United States Energy Star guidelines; fulfilling the required minimum CRI of 75.

LED industry giants, including Formosa Epitaxy (3061), Unity Opto (2499), Amtran, and LG Display (LGD), have jointly-invested a total of NT4.8 billion (~USD 150 million) to set up an LED chip manufacturing plant in Jiangsu – Jiangsu Canyang Corporation (transliterated). Yangzhou Municipal Government, in Jiangsu Province, has also granted NT 2.4~2.5 billion (~USD 78 million) in subsidies to encourage the development of the LED industry in China. 

LED industry research institute indicated that Taiwan listed LED manufactures’ October revenues reached NT$6.974 bn in total, up 0.7% MoM and 23% YoY growth - of which, LED chip makers’ total revenue in October added 7.3% MoM to NT$ 3.151 bn, while LED packagers posted a 7.3% MoM decline to NT$ 3.823 bn.

Harvatek Corporation announces the addition of high-speed infrared (IR) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in both surface-mount and through-hole packages.

Opto Diode Corporation, a supplier of standard and custom infrared and visible LEDs and high performance photodetectors, introduces a new 99 Die LED array product line. The family of products features excellent thermal conductivity, a 110-degree beam angle and a wide range of wavelengths from 405 nm to 870 nm. The six new devices are available in varying wavelengths with typical peak wavelengths of 405, 470, 525, 610, 830 and 870 nm, respectively.

The infrared Platinum DRAGON from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors provides a high radiance from a small surface. With its 1 mm² thin-film chip in stack technology it generates an optical output of almost 1 W from a driving current of 1 A – that’s almost twice the output of the standard chips that have been used up to now. The viewing angle and radiant intensity can be varied with standard secondary optics. Preferred applications are those which require high radiance so that small optics can be used.

Messe München has just published a white paper that discusses the current state of the organic electronics (OE) market, including rfid tags, OLED, AM OLED, PM OLED, electroluminescence, e-paper and market forecast. "The promise of organic electronics - previously-unimaginable innovative products" discusses OE industry trends, market size, needed improvements, and the status of technologies. The paper also mentions challenges and needed industry changes.

HKTDC Hong Kong International Lighting Fair (Autumn Edition) will be held through 27-30 October in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. This year the fair, will feature over 1, 700 exhibitors from 31 countries and regions. First-time exhibitors are from Hungry, Poland, New Zealand and Brazil.

The discontinuation of many foreign-held patents on diode-based technologies by 2010 is expected to cut prices of China-made LED bulbs and tubes further. Among the multinational companies with several licenses expiring in the next few months are Osram, Nichia and Cree.

Osram Opto Semiconductors partnered with the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary, Canada to help a team of 600 students send an LED illuminated message to the International Space Station as it passes overhead. On September 19th, 2009, in the dark of night, the students gathered in a remote field to send their message to the International Space Station as it passed over Calgary, 300 km (186 miles) above the earth’s surface.

Luminus Devices, Inc., developer and manufacturer of high light output, "Big Chip" PhlatLight LEDs, yesterday announced the introduction of the SBM-160 PhlatLight LED, the industry’s brightest multi-color LED available in a surface-mount (SMT) package. This breakthrough product is ideally suited for entertainment and architectural applications where high optical output and high efficiency are required.

September 11, 2009- According to survey of the industry research institute LEDinside, Taiwan's listed LED manufacturers recorded total revenue of NT 6.411 billion in August 2009, a 7.2% growth from July and a 8.3% growth YoY – of which, LED chip makers’ total revenue in August gained 5.2% to NT 2.757 billion, while LED packagers posted NT 3.654 billion, 8.7% growth MoM.

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors released a new addition to its LED range: the Oslon MX ECE. This low-cost high-power ceramic component is intended for the front light clusters of mid-range vehicles – mainly as daytime running lights. This new LED is an important addition to OSRAM’s extensive product portfolio for the automotive sector.

Recently, Nobuki Kurita, president of Sony’s marketing unit in Japan indicated that Sony’s 2009 year-end LCD TV sales in Japan is expected to grow by 50% compared to the same period last year.

Scientists at the University of Washington are working on a human machine interface where LEDs are embedded into contact lenses in order to display information to the wearer. This human machine interface will use custom-built transparent circuitry in a polymer lens that is roughly 1.2 millimeters in diameter.
