Philips Luxeon Rebel Becomes First ‘UL Recognized’ DC Power LED

Philips Lumileds today announced that its LUXEON Rebel LEDs are recognized by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), and have become the first high power DC LEDs to earn UL Recognized certification. The recognition will speed time to market by making it possible to obtain UL Listed status for new luminaires built with LUXEON Rebel without requiring a full insystem LED component investigation.

Hot/Cold Factor compares the light output of the LED at 100°C Tj and at 25°C Tj—which is how LEDs are specified on a datasheet. Blinx Releases Sound Responsive LED Earphones

Blinx has introduced new sound responsive LED earphones, reports Ubergizmo. The earphones are equipped with a control box which enables the LED to pulse according to the tune of the music being played. Each of these earphones and the central control box includes three blue LED lights. These earphones are compatible with any device housing a standard 3.5mm jack. Apparently, the earphones are powered by two ZA13HP batteries. The Blinx earphones are also said to bundle up foam earbud protectors and instruction leaflet.

Since power supply companies ventured into the LED field, vendors have been optimistic about the outlook for market demand in 3Q09, according to industry sources. Lite-On Tech. Japan’s OKI Electric Industry (TOKYO:6703) and OKI Data Corp., which markets under the OKI Printing Solutions brand recently announced that the OKI Group will increase its LED (light-emitting diode) production for print heads used in its non-impact printers, and enhance new LED-related businesses. OSRAM Opto Semiconductors’ Golden DRAGON Plus LEDs are used by Guangzhou Zhonglong Communications Technology Co. Ltd. for the Yangzi River tunnel luminaire project in mainland China. With an internal diameter of 12.7m, the tunnel is 8.9km long in a twin-tunnel complex and each of the bores with 3-lane of traffic. 5,886 tunnel luminaries with over 410,000 pieces of OSRAM Golden DRAGON Plus LEDs will be installed in two bores. The Yangzi River tunnel will be the longest in the world to have brilliant LED light.

A young Kelabit scientist has co-invented the world's fastest spontaneous Light Emitting Transistor (LET) and Light Emitting Diode (LED). Gabriel Walter, 32, an electrical engineering doctor from the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign (UIUC), scored both a national and personal breakthrough in technology by co-inventing light emitters capable of transmitting at speeds of up to 7GHz. Samsung Sets up LED Manufacturing Base in Tianjin, China

Samsung LED, a light-emitting diodes (LED) unit of Samsung, the global electronics giant, has set up its first overseas manufacturing base in Tianjin, China. Tianjin Samsung LED Co., Ltd, was established with a starting capital of 30 million U.S. dollars, according to the Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area (Teda) Administrative Commission. The spokesman Zhang Liang said Saturday that initial investment to the Tianjin manufacturing base would reach 90 million U.S. dollars.
