Unity Opto Repoted the Final Finance Result of 1H10

Taiwan’s LED packaging company Unity Opto Technology reported the final finance result of the first half of 2010, which includes consolidated net profit of NT$661.728 million (US$20.65 million) with an EPS of NT$2.15. Consolidated revenues of Unity Opto is NT$3.906 billion and unconsolidated revenues is NT$3.25 billion.

Soochow University procures AIXTRON Black Magic tool for nanoelectronics, sensing and energy research

AIXTRON AG announced an order for one Black Magic deposition system in a 4-inch wafer configuration from Soochow University’s Functional Nano & Soft Materials Laboratory (FUNSOM) in Suzhou, Jiangsu, China. The order was received in the first quarter of 2010 and after the system´s delivery and installment in the current quarter, the Black Magic will be used for the controlled growth of carbon nanotubes and silicon nanowires.

TSMC to invest US$319.6 million for developing new businesses

According to the executive of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), TSMC will hire 500-600 staff, mostly R&D-focused engineers, for the construction of a new fab at the Central Taiwan Science Park (CTSP) to produce thin-film solar PV modules, with volume production expected to kick off in 2011. Recently, for the new businesses, TSMC's board of directors decided to invest US$319.6 million. Construction on the facility began in March, and the equipment move-in for its LED fab at the Hsinchu Science Park on schedule of September.

Chicony works with Unity Opto by investing US$12.5 million

Chicony Power Technology, a subsidiary of Chicony Electronics, plans to work with a Taiwan LED chip packaging company Unity Opto Technology by investing NT$400 million (US$12.5 million) to acquire zero-interest 5-year convertible bonds. Cooperation between the two companies hopes to aim the LED backlight units using in LCD TVs and TV power supplies through the investment.

Taiwan’s LED chipmaker Epistar Expected to Sign Patent Agreement with Japan’s Nichia or Toyoda Gosei

Taiwan’s No.1 LED chipmaker Epistar Inc. is reportedly to will sign a patent cross-licensing agreement with its Japanese counterparts Nichia or Toyoda Gousei in a bid to further boost earnings and revenue. Once the deal is concluded Taiwan’s LED industry would see its price/earnings ratio surge to at least 20 folds as a whole from current 15 folds or so, according to the industry executives estimated.

Austriamicrosystems’s new 144-channel LED driver suitable for dot-matrix displays

Austriamicrosystems has announced the AS1119, the most advanced and smallest LED dot-matrix driver, the company said it is targeted for dot-matrix displays in mobile phones, personal electronics and toys. The AS1119 drives 144 LEDs but requires only 9 mm² PCB space, reduces external component count, reduces connector pin count and requires fewer PCB layers.
