Yonkers and New York Power Authority Rolls out Large Scale LED Streetlight Upgrade

Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano and the New York Power Authority (NYPA) in U.S. announced that, through their partnership in the Five Cities Energy Initiative, Yonkers will replace 20,200 interior lighting fixtures with LED energy efficient tubes in all city operated buildings. The project, partially funded by NYPA, will save Yonkers taxpayers up to $250,000 per year and reduce the City’s carbon footprint by 1,226 tons annually.

Osram Participates in Research for Finding New Rare-earth-reduced White LEDs

Rare-earth metals, which are needed for dyes and phosphor converters in light emitting diodes, are a finite resource. Osram Opto Semiconductors, as one of four partners in the “ORCA” project, is therefore researching and developing new types of organic dyes and inorganic phosphor converters. The aim of this project, which began on May, 2016, is to reduce the volume of these materials by developing new solutions, and to encourage the implementation of these solutions in actual production.

LEDinside:Seasonality Kept Prices of LED Light Bulbs on a Downtrend in July

LEDinside, a division of TrendForce, reports the global average sales prices of 40-watt and 60-watt equivalent LED light bulbs in July fell 0.7% and 0.6% versus the prior month, respectively, to US$9.5 and US$12.9.   “July was the start of the traditional off season for the LED industry,” said LEDinside analyst Allen Yu. “Furthermore, the economic conditions in Europe and the U.S. remained weak, so the demand rebound that occurred in the lighting market was limited to just the second quarter. Retail prices of LED light bulbs slid entering the third quarter, and some products suffered larger price drops on account of promotional activities.”

Evluma LED Luminaire Receives IDA Seal of Approval

LED lighting manufacturer Evluma has received the IDA (International Dark Sky Association) Fixture Seal of Approval for its 40W and 70W 3000K CCT LED AreaMax street and area lights. IDA's Fixture Seal of Approval program certifies outdoor lighting fixtures as being Dark Sky Friendly, meaning that they minimize glare while reducing light trespass and skyglow. Certification criteria includes a CCT of 3000K or below and a U0 rating, emitting no light above 90 degrees. Street and area light submittals must also identify an optional backlight shield, available for the AreaMax since 2015.
