EVERLIGHT filed a declaratory judgment action against Nichia Corporation (“Nichia”) for invalidity and non-infringement of U.S. Patent Nos. 5,998,925 and 7,531,960 in the U.S. District Court for Eastern District of Michigan in 2012. These two patents are directed to YAG phosphor being used in LEDs and phosphor concentration. The court on January 19, 2016 denied Nichia’s motions and confirmed the April 22, 2015 jury verdict that all asserted claims of Nichia’s patents were invalid. In addition to the U.S. court ruling, from 2014, EVERLIGHT has continued to receive favorable rulings in Japan and Germany that Nichia’s patents are invalid.

The value of the global LED market has been growing at a crawling pace as demand for backlight LEDs contracts. Automotive LEDs, however, are one of the few sizable application markets that are developing rapidly along with other smaller markets for niche industrial LED products. The latest analysis by LEDinside, a division of TrendForce, finds the replacement of traditional light bulbs with LED light sources continues steadily in the automotive lighting market despite the slowing growth in the regional automobile markets worldwide during the second quarter. While the percentage of LED-based products in developed markets continues to expand, emerging markets are also seeing gradual adoption. LEDinside projects that the value of the exterior automotive LED market will reach US$1.57 billion this year and will grow at a CAGR of 6% in the 2016~2020 period.

The U.S. Department of Commerce on June 30 announced appointees to the newly established U.S.–Mexico Energy Business Council. Four appointees are Members of the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA): Julian Alzate, director of international relations at Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories Inc.; R. Craig Breese, president of Honeywell Mexico, Honeywell International Inc.; Vernon Murray, vice president and general manager for Mexico and Northern Latin America at Emerson Process Management; and Darryl Wilson, vice president and chief commercial officer at GE Energy Connections. Researchers at MIT and elsewhere have found a new way of using mid-infrared lasers to turn regions of molecules in the open air into glowing filaments of electrically charged gas, or plasma. The new method could make it possible to carry out remote environmental monitoring to detect a wide range of chemicals with high sensitivity.
