The First Baptist Church of Bethalto, Illinois was looking to update its facility with improved lighting that provided energy savings. The 25,000-square-foot building and exterior were lit by an aging system of fluorescent and metal halide fixtures that had become prohibitively expensive and labor intensive to maintain. Converting to LED was the ideal solution because of its lower energy consumption and longevity. Working with local representative agency Cool City Lights, the church replaced the lighting throughout the property with MaxLite LED lamps and fixtures.

Leaders in the LED industry have been supportive of Epistar’s decision to scale down production capacity, the Taiwanese company has frozen nearly a quarter of its production capacity and initiated the largest scale down since its founding, reported China Times. This move could lower increasing cost pressures from depreciating old equipment, but at several large manufacturers shareholder meeting last week, Everlight Chairman Robert Yeh and Unity Opto’s Chairman Alpha Wu supported Epistar’s move, and from a chip buyer perspective announced chip prices had reached rock bottom.

Demands for sustainable solutions and lower energy prices have made LED lights become the lighting commodity of choice. As LED light bulbs and their energy consumption costs fall, a sharp rise in demand is expected across the residential and commercial markets. Researchers at Osaka University developed a technology to control the light wavefront reflected from a cholesteric liquid crystal - a liquid crystal phase with a helical structure. Although known for their ability to Bragg-reflect light, cholesteric liquid crystals could only be used as flat mirrors, reflecting light at the same angle as the incident angle. The new technology enables planar optical components to be made with functionality by design, contributing to the miniaturization of catoptrics devices.

A safety monitoring method called On-Site Visualization has been implemented in metro system construction sites in Jakarta, Indonesia as part of a Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) project. The OEKO Institut has confirmed that there are currently no alternatives on the market that match the color performance and energy-efficiency of solutions based on cadmium selenide (CdSe) quantum dots (QDs). The Commission’s consultant thus recommends the renewal of the RoHS exemption allowing the use of CdSe QDs in displays for a period of three years.

OnChip’s advanced wafer fabrication facility offers backside metallization (BSM) of thin films for various applications such as military, medical, and instrumentation. Back-metal is required on a wide range of Semiconductors devices to form a solderable die attach metal stack to ensure good electrical contact to the chip (ohmic contact) or proper bonding of the chips to their mounting cases. Power devices such as High Brightness Light Emitting Diodes (HB LED) require backside metal for an improved and reliable thermal conductivity. These metal layers are deposited using RF or DC sputtering and electron beam evaporation.

A report from Korean media ET News claimed Chinese manufacturers San’an Opto and HC Semitek joined Epistar’s lead in raising LED chip prices, which Korean media and others analyzed was a sign that plummeting LED chip prices finally rebounded. However, LEDinside found the Korean media report was not an exclusive interview with senior executives from San’an Opto, nor was it a large scale price adjustment.

The scale of China’s LED package industry grew just 2% annually to US$8.8 billion in 2015, according to the 2016 Chinese LED Chip and Package Industry Report by LEDinside, a division of TrendForce. It’s projected that the market scale of Downlight is to reach US $2.01 billion and Projector and Reflectors at US $1.59 billion in 2017.

More than 170 attendees joined DOE and top lighting and IoT experts to examine key barriers and issues impacting development of connected lighting systems. For those new to connected lighting, two pre-workshop introductory sessions were held on communications and cybersecurity fundamentals.

Nichia is very focused on new patent suits, and filed not one but four new suits. The patent suits, include those involving U.S. LED bulb distributors Feit Electric, Meridian, Lowe’s and L G Supplier (not LG Supplier). These three suits are centered around the 250 patent, which involves resin and LED chip leadframe structures. The last suit targeting B&Q self-branded LED bulbs mostly has to do with YAG patents, and unlike the first three is clamping down on home improvement company’s branded bulbs.

Main players in the LED industry, and large volume of visitors attended the annual Guangzhou International Lighting Show 2016, which runs from June 9-12. Although, fewer big lighting brands from U.S., Europe and China attended the show this year, there were plenty of newcomers. Many are focused on the international market, and plenty of manufacturers are hoping to use the platform to increase their exposure in China and the international market.

Japanese LED manufacturer Nichia left a blazing trail of patent lawsuits in 2016, and the latest suit against B&Q seems to add onto the latest list of U.S. LED bulb retailers and distributor suits, except this suit should be viewed independently.

Following Philips Lighting IPO announcement in May, the company recently issued a press release announcing exercise of over-allotment option. The press release intended for financial investors was banned from publication.

Strong arguments exist for overhauling the lighting systems on U.S. roadways with light emitting diodes (LED), but conversions to improper LED technology can have adverse consequences.
