The city of Lawrence will invest over $172,000 to replace 115 lights with LEDs, as part of its overall goal to improve the quality of life for the community. It’s said that Samsung LED has decided to team up with Japan’s Sumitomo Chemical to build a sapphire ingot plant in Daegu. They plan to break the ground in the 11,000 square meter site on April 20, with the target date for completion in coming October. On Tuesday, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has announced updated standards for light fixtures to qualify for the Energy Star label. According to EPA, effective Oct. 1, to receive Energy Star endorsement, light fixtures will need to increase efficiency 30 percent above currently qualified fluorescent-based fixtures. In addition, the requirement will rise to 40 percent greater efficiency than current Energy Star lighting in 2013.
