Cree, Inc., a market leader in LED lighting, today announced consolidated revenue of $347 million from continuing operations, and $54 million from discontinued operations, for a combined revenue of $401 million for its second quarter of fiscal 2017. This represents an 8% decrease compared to combined revenue of $436 million ($394 million from continuing operations and $42 million from discontinued operations) for the second quarter of fiscal 2016 and an 8% increase compared to the first quarter of fiscal 2017. Combined GAAP net income for the second quarter of fiscal 2017 was $6 million, or $0.06 per diluted share, compared to combined GAAP net income of $13 million, or $0.13 per diluted share, for the second quarter of fiscal 2016. On a non-GAAP basis, combined net income for the second quarter of fiscal 2017 was $30 million, or $0.30 per diluted share, compared to combined non-GAAP net income for the second quarter of fiscal 2016 of $28 million, or $0.28 per diluted share.

Since November 2016, LED light bulb vendors have lowered prices of their products for regional markets including Japan, Europe and the U.S. as part of their year-end promotions. The downtrend in prices became more noticeable at the end of the year. “Compared with the prior month, global average sales price (ASP) of 40-watt equivalent LED light bulb fell 3% to US$8.7 in December,” said Allen Yu, analyst for LEDinside, a division of TrendForce. “The global ASP of 60-watt equivalent LED light bulbs also saw a monthly decline of 2.4%, arriving around US$12.”

According to the latest report from LEDinside, a division of the market research firm TrendForce, the markets of the IR LED/ IR Laser and optical sensor applications will witness a broad variety of business opportunities give that major IR products, such as security surveillance systems, and new tools and applications, including facial recognition, iris recognition, pulse oximetry sensor, virtual reality, gaming notebook, IR touch panel, and automotive sensors, are under continuous development. 

Factory Pipe, a manufacturer of high-performance exhaust systems, is collaborating with Current, powered by GE, to make its Ukiah, California headquarters more efficient. The company is offsetting 75% of its energy use through Current’s rooftop solar offering and saving close to 60% in lighting-related energy use with an LED lighting retrofit in its manufacturing warehouse.

According to the latest ‘ 2017 Global Sapphire and LED Chip Market Report by LEDinside, a division of the global market research firm TrendForce, LED chip market value was USD 6,329 million in 2015, while it grew by 3% to USD 6,502 million in 2016. Since the second half of 2016, Chinese LED packaging manufacturers have scaled up rapidly, targeting applications expected to prevail in the market for the next three years, including general lighting, automotive lighting, and display application. That further fosters Tier 1 Chinese LED chip manufacturers to volume up their productivity.

The value of the global LED market is estimated to grow 3.4% annually to US$14.8 billion in 2016, according to LEDinside, a division of TrendForce. The LED industry will again be under tremendous competitive pressure in 2017, and participants will need to accelerate their entries into more profitable niche markets such as fine-pitch LED displays, UV LEDs and IR LEDs. LEDinside forecasts that the value of the global LED market will total US$15.4 billion, up 4% from 2016.

 LEDinside, a division of TrendForce, reports that the global average selling prices (ASPs) of LED light bulbs saw greater monthly drops in November than in October as branded light bulb vendors started to offer year-end promotional discounts and released new low-price products on the market.   “Compared with the prior month, the global ASPs of 40-watt and 60-watt equivalent LED light bulbs fell 2.9% and 2.7% respectively in November to US$9 and US$12.3,” said LEDinside analyst Allen Yu.

Since early November, many Chinese carton factories began to reject new orders or restrict orders. The situation has been ongoing till now, with factories in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai areas responded the most. As many as 18 local large and medium-sized carton factories issued emergent notices of the rise in price on the single day of November 12. Paper suddenly became in short supply. Epileds and High Power Lighting announced at a product conference at the end of 2016 the joint venture company named Bioraytron. The joint company will enable vertical integration of DUV LED applications, starting from epitaxy to LED chip manufacturing while focusing on the sales of UV-C LED packages and modules.

The European Photonics Industry Consortium (EPIC) and China Solid State Lighting Alliance (CSA) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to strengthen their partnership, reported Novus Lighting.

After being steady for two consecutive months, prices of LED light bulbs began to drop noticeably in China during October, according to LEDinside, a division of TrendForce. Branded light bulb vendors operating in the Chinese market begin promotional pricing much earlier before Singles’ Day on November 11.   “Compared with the prior month, 40- and 60-watt equivalent LED light bulbs both saw a decline of 0.6% in their global average selling prices in October,” said LEDinside Allen Yu. “The 40-watt equivalent LED light bulbs arrived at US$9.2, while the 60-watt came to US$12.6.”

The latest analysis “2017 Global Lighting Market Outlook” by LEDinside, a division of TrendForce, finds that LED lighting market to worth US $29.6 billion in 2016 and is to rise to US $ 33.1 billion as of 2017. Meanwhile, the penetration rate of LED lighting is to reach 52%. Thanks to regional lighting development, LED lighting is to account for 23% of total lightings in Europe by 2016, which is the highest across the world. The second and third highest region are to be found in North America and China. However, Asia- Pacific region is to witness fastest growth rate in LED lighting.

Chinese investor Fujian Grand Chip Investment Fund (FGC) was supposed to have sealed deal between German semiconductor equipment manufacturers Aixtron on Oct. 6, 2016, but was abruptly called off by the German Economic Ministry this Monday over unspecified national security issues.
