The Chinese city Shanghai aims to establish itself as a national LED base with all sectors in the industry chain, from chip design, screen vendors to assembly and test. At 2010 Shanghai World Expo, more than 80 percent of indoor lighting features LED technology, which is regarded as a green technology. So, multinational and domestic LED firms also are seeking to expand their presence in the Chinese market after the Expo ends.

The Chinese decorative lighting manufacturer Neo-Neon LED Lighting International Ltd. will open 2,000 LED lighting fixtures shops in three to five years throughout mainland China, which is estimated an investment of 500 million Chinese yuan (US$73 million). B.Y. Fan, the company’s chairman, noted that the company opened its first retail shop in Hong Kong early this year and will open a store in Taipei next year.

Veeco Instruments Inc. announced that Elec-Tech International has selected its TurboDisc(R) K465i MOCVD systems as their "tool of choice" for two new LED factories in Wuhu and Yangzhou, China. In August Veeco booked the initial systems from a large multi-tool purchase order from Elec-Tech's LED subsidiary, Elec-Tech Optoelectronic Technology (Wuhu) Co., Ltd.

Royal Philips Electronics participates in the 1000-Village Solar LED program, an initiative launched by The Climate Group and the One Foundation to provide rural communities in China with energy-efficient solar-powered LED lighting.

Chinese Yangzhou Zhongke Semiconductor Lighting Center Co. Ltd has ordered two CRIUS 31x2-inch configuration deposition systems from AIXTRON AG. Zhongke placed the order in the fourth quarter of 2009 and after delivery in the second quarter of 2010 they will be used for GaN high brightness LED production for streetlight and display backlighting applications. The local AIXTRON support team will commission the new reactors at the facility within the company’s research group, ISCAS, in China.

Veeco Instruments Inc., announced today that Sanan Optoelectronics Co. Ltd., the largest manufacturer of full color LEDs in China, has placed a large multi-tool order for Veeco's K465i(TM) and E475(TM) TurboDisc(R) Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) Systems. The equipment is for Sanan's new LED fab in Wuhu, Anhui Province for the manufacturing of high brightness light emitting diodes (HB LEDs). Veeco booked the order earlier this month.

LED-based tunnel lighting for two new highway tunnels in central China is saving up to 60% in energy consumption and related costs over fixtures built with traditional light sources. China New Media Corporation, a fast-growing advertising media company operating the largest outdoor media network in Dalian, China, today announced it entered a Strategic Alliance Agreement with a newspaper giant in China -- Liaoning Daily Press Group -- for plans to install and operate five mega-sized LED media screens. China New Media Corp. estimates it will invest RMB 40 million (US$5.86 million) to install and operate the five large-sized LED screens with a total size of over 1,500 square meters.

China’s color TV market is booming and the market growth potential of local Chinese brands is phenomenal. This is because the reputation of local Chinese brands is increasing, with lower prices, as well as the rapid upgrades of the CCFL-backlit LCD TV and the LED-backlit LCD TV, these products are very attractive for consumers who have not yet purchased a color TV.
