The Cree Cup Launches in China with Nearly 1,000 Students Submitting More than 100 Designs The first Cree Cup - Creative LED Lighting Design Contest for China University Students jointly organized by the China Association of Lighting Industry (CALI) and Cree, Inc. has successfully completed its preliminary round. After evaluation by the Contest Review Committee, 50 design projects have been selected for the final round.

Epistar Corp., Taiwan’s largest LED chip manufacturer, has decided to spend US$600 million to set up a LED production factory in Jiangsu, China, according to an article on Taiwan Economic News.

Neo-Neon Holdings Ltd, a China-based decorative lighting manufacturer, Wednesday said it planned to expand its LED wafer output seven-fold over the next three years, according to an article on Taipei Times.

According to the statistics of industry research institute LEDinside, China’s overall demand for LED street lights in 2009 is around 30 thousand units, far less than the number the market had expected at the beginning of 2009. The main reason is that street light standards have not been established, and the quality and quantity of LED street lights still have yet to stand the test of time. As a result, the aspect which the government’s policy supports is starting to change from outdoor lighting to indoor lighting.

2010 World Expo will be held from 1 May to 31 October next year in Shanghai, China.
