Chinese Government Publishes the Demonstration Project Bid Award list of Solid State Lighting Applications, Raising Expectations for Its LED Domestic Market The Chinese central government has recently held a large-scale open bidding for LED lighting products. The National Development and Reform Commission, Ministry of Housing, and Urban-Rural Development Commission and Ministry of Transport conducted the tender evaluation together and published the bid award list on November 24th, 2010. 

Taiwan Delta Electronics, is taking part in the 2010 China International Green Industry Expo (CIGIE), which is the No.1 green industry expo in China, offering high level, large scale, and big business opportunities. At the expo, Delta Electronics is showcasing various energy-saving solutions in the low-carbon technology field, such as: electric vehicle propulsion systems and charging stations, renewable energy generation systems, LED lighting, and low energy consumption visual display solutions.

Ultratech is about to set up a new international headquarters in Singapore on December 6, 2010 to better serve its large customer base in Asia. And it is scheduled to begin shipping lithography systems to customers in Q1 of 2011. The Singapore facility will engineer and manufacture its lithography systems and other related products, including lithography steppers for advanced packaging and HB LEDs and modules for the laser spike anneal systems.

To comply with a strict energy policy which aims to cut down CO2 emission and energy consumption from the Chinese government’s “11th Five Year Plan”, big enterprises in the mainland start seeking energy-stingy LED lamps to replace traditional lamps in their plants. According to LED-lighting makers, sales of T8 light tubes and light bulbs lit up by LEDs will obviously ramp up throughout this quarter.

Recently, Wafer Works reported that the company planed to invest US$600,000 for Formosa Epitaxy's new subsidiary in Jiangsu, China, with a 1% share. For Wafer Works, it was not a small stake, but the shareholder relations would improve its ability in the LED supply chain, with the sapphire substrate prices on the rise in 4Q.

AIXTRON AG today announced an order from Jiangxi Changda, a new customer in the southern province of PR China. Jiangxi Changda has ordered two AIX 2800G4 HT 2 inch MOCVD tools. The new HB GaN LED growth reactors have been successfully installed and commissioned by the local AIXTRON support team at the company’s facility.

Organized by Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), in co-operation with the Department of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation of Guangdong Province (GD-DOFTEC), the first-ever Lifestyle Expo in Mumbai (LEM)2010 was held in Mumbai for three days from October 28-30, 2010.   LEM 2010 presented Indian companies with lifestyle products from leading suppliers in Hong Kong and Guangdong Province, China.

Taiwan-based LED maker Epistar has partnered with China Electronics Corp. (CEC) to build a joint venture, which will bring in a large number of MOCVD chambers, and concentrate on production of epitaxial wafers, chips, light sources and lighting products in southern China. It's reported that each company will hold a 45% stake in the joint venture, leaving the remaining 10% to another partner.

Under a successful Beta test at a Florida Lexus car dealership, which provided valuable rollout information, SavWatt USA, Inc. has decided to cooperate with their supplier Unilumin,  one of the few Chinese companies that have UL approval for LED Street Lights in Shenzhen ,to launch an aggressive marketing campaign for their UL approved and certified LED Street Lights.

It is reported that Foxconn Electronics will invest US$10 billion in Chengdu to pave way for Chimei Innolux (CMI), which planed to build a factory with producing TFT-LCD panel. While CMI said their indeed planed to invest in china, but the investment was still under evaluation.

The municipal government office in Dongguan, China, has issued a "Dongguan to promote industrial development and application of LED demonstration plan". The plan proposed that some roads to the city street lights newly installed or modified as LED, LED lighting industry in output value reached 15 billion yuan in 2015.And six years to install 80,000 LED lamps.

World renowned Cleantech group announced its 2010 top 100 Cleantech companies on October 14th, 2010. LatticePower has been listed in the 100 list, the top 10 of Asia-Pacific and one of three companies from China who shares the prestige.

According to the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) of Taiwan, it has worked out a set of draft standards governing intelligent LED illumination management and communications, and will team up with mainland China to jointly lead LED standards.

It is reported that Taiwan and China vendors will test LED street lamps in Xiamen, Fujian Province and Guangzhou, by cross-strait standards for LED street lighting. Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) will assist to choose test sites, and two test sites have chosen, including Xiamen's Huoju Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone and line one of Guangzhou's Metro subway system.

Recently, LED epitaxial wafer and chip maker Genesis Photonics has began construction for its joint venture with the Kunshan city government in China. The first stage engineering of the joint venture will host 50 sets of MOCVD machines. In the new factory, Genesis has held 51% stake, and Kunshan city government has held the other stake. The new factory will start production in Q3 of 2011 and will be the largest LED chip and lighting manufacturing base in China.

The subsidiary of China Trends Holdings Limited (China Trends) ,Boss Information Systems Limited will cooperate with the subsidiaries of TCL Corporation, Huizhou TCL Lighting Appliance Technology Limited and Dooda Innovation invested by China Innovation to establish a strategic cooperation on R&D, production, sales and distribution of energy-saving LED products under CEM business model to achieve the mutual sharing on resources.

The global LED-backlit TV market share didn’t reach the goal of 30% of the LCD TV market in 2010. Following the coming of National Day and the year-end holiday sales in Q410, Taiwan and China LCD TV suppliers started the price war to increase sales volume and gain a head-start in the LED-backlit TV market in the future.

In china, LED chip makers recently planed to pay for MOCVD equipment about 1,400-1,600 sets, which attract many people in the industry concerned. From the LED supply chain, the upstream companies can got about 70% of profits, and LED chip packaging accounts for about 30%.Most china’s LED industry is in the chip packaging segment, so they wanted to develop epitaxial and LED chip production, and china government also supported that.

It's reported that the Chinese government has invested over10 billion yuan (1.47 billion U.S. dollars) in research and development of green technologies for the 2006-2010 period. Zhang Laiwu, vice minister of science and technology at a press conference in Beijing pointed out that, China had developed key technologies that could cut greenhouse emissions . More than 1.6 million LED lights were being used in 21 cities in a pilot program to promote the use of LED lights, which will save more than 164 million KWH of electricity annually. 

Organized by the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), a consumer product promotion delegation which comprises 74 local consumer product producers, will take an visit to Seoul of South Korea and Fukuoka, Osaka and Tokyo of Japan between Sept. 30 and Oct. 9. According to a TAITRA official, during this trip, they will promote patented consumer products, including LED related goods, toys and household products as buyers in the two markets appreciate innovation and high quality designs.

Led by the Minister without Portfolio J.F. Chang of the Executive Yuan, Taiwan’s Cabinet, a delegation of over 60 executives from 20 Taiwanese high-tech manufacturers recently set out for the United States to hunt for talents in Silicon Valley and Boston. It mainly recruited specialists in six sectors including photovoltaic, optoelectronics, materials, and biotech. Delegation members planned to offer a total of 1,200 jobs covering R&D specialists, market researchers, market managers, and accountants.

According to the Chairman and President of China TV manufacturer Skyworth Zhang Xuebin, Skyworth is planned to cut the prices of LED flat-panel televisions in the next six months to promote the sales. Zhang added that Chinese TV producers cut prices of about 25% in old TV models between April and June.

Magic Bulb, a Chinese company, has created rechargeable LED bulbs and decided to show off their creation at IFA. These bulbs use all of 4W of power while shining as brightly as a 50W bulb. 

Following making incentives, On September 6, the Yangzhou government of China's Jiangsu Province will convene investors in Taipei in the filed of solar, LED lighting, e-book reader and smart-grid sectors. Some based-Taiwan makers, such as Amtran Technology, Unity Opto Technology, Formosa Epitaxy and the Far Eastern Business Group will attend the meeting.

LED industry has become one of today’s most promising industries because LED is energy-saving, environment-friendly and long-lasting. In China, the LED industry has attracted great attention from Chinese governments and private investors. China’s LED chip industry has received a huge investment from 2009 to 2010.

Taiwan’s caliber electronic device maker Delta Electronics Inc. has received new orders from the Guangdong Provincial Government. Guangdong Governor Huang Hau-hau and the delegation has visited Delta in mid-August and showed intense interest in its LED streetlights and 3D projectors. Huang hua-hua mentioned that Guangdong aims to invest RMB 10 billion in solar energy, LED lighting and electric cars in the next five years during visiting Delta and praised Delta’s LED streetlights.

Veeco Instruments Inc. has announced that Tsinghua Tongfang Company, a Beijing-based, publicly listed division of the Tsinghua Holdings Company Limited, has selected Veeco as its primary supplier of Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) systems for their new light-emitting diode (LED) factory. Veeco booked the initial systems from a large multi-tool purchase order earlier this month.

Chinese LED lighting leader Neo-Neon will participate in the upcoming Light Middle East trade show to broaden its presence and further promote the use of environmentally friendly LED materials in the Middle East. The Light Middle East is the region's leading trade show for urban, architectural, theatrical and retail lighting solutions, which is going to be held at the Dubai International Exhibition Center on October 31 to November 02, 2010.

According to LEDinside’s latest Report on China’s LED Chip Industry in 2010, China has planned to introduce over 1200 MOCVDs and more than 300 units will be added in 2010.
