Cambrios Technologies Corporation and Plextronics, Inc. have joined a force to develop an OLED material for improving the manufacturing process and quality of lighting products.   An assistance agreement with the Department of Energy (DOE) Solid State Lighting (SSL) program provides part of the fund with the collaboration.  

Recently, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has awarded Luminus Devices’s 50th patent for ‘Big-Chip’ LEDs. Luminus has aggressively filed intellectual property (IP) for protection of big chip LED devices, packages and systems.

Recently, Lighting manufacturer Philips and LED lamp maker Lemnis Lighting signed a license agreement. On the basis of the agreement, Lemnis would join Philips licensing program for LED-based luminaries and retrofit bulbs. And Philips would obtain access to the LED-lamp architecture and control patents of Lemnis.

Recently, a leader of High-power LED packaging house Edison Opto thought LED lighting would grow up quickly in 2011 and the company revenues would reach NT$10 billion (US$331.54 million) in 2012 with the expanding capacity.

NXP Semiconductors N.V. has promoted two collections of automotive LED driver ICs ASL1010NTK and ASL1010PHN, designed for vehicle LED headlights and tail lights. According to NXP, automotive LEDs have used complex, relatively expensive driver ICs made for generic Solid State Lighting applications that lack many of the critical functions needed for automotive applications.

A materials development innovator Intematix, specializes in patented phosphors for high-quality and high-performance LED applications, has introduced green aluminate and red nitride materials that enable high-quality white illumination when applied to blue LEDs to their product line. It’s considered as the broadest portfolio of LED phosphors in the market worldwide.

Lumiotec announced that they will begin mass production of OLED Lighting panels in January 2011. The production capacity will be around 60,000 panels a year, and the company will offer panels in five different shapes (two squares and three rectangular) and in two different colors: lamp (3000K) and natural white (5000K). Selling 60,000 panels a year means that most of these will go into commercial lamps, and not just 'sample designs'.

America Tampa, Florida based LED lighting maker LEDnovation has recently launched a line of MR16 lamps for use in standard low voltage lighting applications and previously brought to market A19 or "Edison" type LED replacement lamps optimized for use in downlights and other semi-enclosed directional fixtures.   The new lamp has been both electronically and optically optimized to eliminate the scalloping, rings and other optical variations that are often seen in traditional reflector lamps.

LCD chipmaker Formosa Epitaxy reported October 2010 revenues of NT$400.72 million (US$13.31 million), down 0.04% sequentially but up 58.86% on year. In November, the company pointed out that demand for TV backlighting was picking up on which revenues depended, but the growth was not as significant as in 2009, and December revenues were expected to drop as clients went through inventory stock checks.

TFT LCD driver IC maker Himax Technologies 3Q10 revenues were US$138 million, down 26.3% sequentially but still meeting its adjusted forecast. And gross margin increased 2.5pp to 22.9%. Quarterly net income came to US$400,000. Non-driver IC products accounted for 8.4% in 3Q revenues.

QD Vision, Inc. has signed an agreement with Solvay to develop a printable electroluminescent platform for quantum dot LEDs (QLEDs) that will lead to a new generation of solid state lighting products.  

Visualization specialist Barco has released a new line of LED-lit, DLP-based video walls with an improved LED engine. The new series features an advanced heat management system based on liquid cooling technology, which brings the LED temperature down to the optimal level. This results in a significantly longer lifetime of the projection system, amounting to 80,000 hours of continuous operation in eco-mode – or a 35% improvement over competing video walls.

Avago Technologies has introduced cyan-colored high-power ASMT-JC11 and ASMT-AC00 1-Watt LEDs optimized for traffic signals as well as sign backlighting and architectural, commercial and decorative lighting applications at the Electronica 2010 trade fair. The new LEDs address space constraints in applications with one of the industry’s smallest footprints of 5 mm by 4 mm by 1.85 mm for the ASMT-JC11 device’s 6-leaded small outline package (SOP).

Carmanah Technologies Corp has supplies its EverGEN(TM) 1530 solar LED lighting systems as part of a pilot project to help a major electric company in the United States for illuminating a power generating facility parking lot. Green Energy Management Services Holdings, Inc. has signed a ten-year efficient lighting installation and maintenance contract Valued at $2.6 Million with Co-op City, the largest residential development in the United States, located in The Bronx, New York.
