British Telecommunications plc (BT)  has installed a giant electronic information band at the top of the iconic BT Tower in London. The 360 degree LED array – which is believed to be the highest of its kind in Europe and the Americas – will be switched on for the first time this evening with a pyrotechnic display and a message to celebrate 1000 days to go to the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Philips Lumileds has announced broad release of its white automotive rated LUXEON Rebel LEDs. Intended for use in automotive applications such as daytime running lamps, position lamps, backup lamps and interior lighting, these LUXEON Rebel parts provide superior design flexibility and are engineered and tested to exceed automotive requirements for reliability, performance, and lifetime. Each part conforms to both the SAE and ECE color specifications and has complete PPAP documentation.

Nu Horizons Electronics has signed a distribution agreement with Sharp Microelectronics Europe for the UK and Nordic territories. Nu Horizons currently distributes Sharp's electronic components in North America. The new deal marks the distributor's first major LED, optoelectronics and display module franchise in European markets.

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors announced it has developed new transparent OLED prototypes which are only a few hundred micrometers thick and do not need separate encapsulation. The samples have a luminous area of 210 cm² and are already showing the enormous potential of OLED light sources.

The infrared Platinum DRAGON from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors provides a high radiance from a small surface. With its 1 mm² thin-film chip in stack technology it generates an optical output of almost 1 W from a driving current of 1 A – that’s almost twice the output of the standard chips that have been used up to now. The viewing angle and radiant intensity can be varied with standard secondary optics. Preferred applications are those which require high radiance so that small optics can be used.

Germany is initiating a trend in Europe – with the first highway service area equipped with brilliant modern LED lighting at the A24 in Walsleben, the Federal Ministry of Traffic is setting international standards. OSRAM’s LED technology contributes to the energy efficiency of Volkswagen’s L1 concept car presented at the Frankfurt International Motor Show (IAA). Sharp Electronics announced the availability of its range of AQUOS Full Screen LED backlight LCD TVs for commercial use. Originally introduced to the world’s media in August this year, the ultra-low energy, affordable LE600 and LE700 televisions are expected to be popular for digital signage and multimedia applications. The LE600 is available in 32”, 40” and 46” models with the LE700 spanning the same range with the addition of a 52” model.
