austriamicrosystems has unveiled the AS3696, the first 4-channel LED driver IC with dedicated 3D TV features and unique power feedback regulation.   Available for edge lighting in LCD televisions, the AS3696 is the first to include a special control mechanism for 3D effects and extends austriamicrosystems’ portfolio of LED backlight unit drivers for the next generation of LCD TVs.  

ZMD AG has introduced ZLED7012 and ZLED7022, the second wave of its ZLED family of LED control solutions, featuring two low-voltage ICs available for battery-powered handheld devices. Both of the two LED ICs, suit for the ultra-small UTQFN package (2x2mm), and feature low-noise, constant-frequency charge pump DC-DC converters that can drive up to four or six strings of LEDs, respectively. Only three external components are required.

The opening and closing ceremonies of the Guangzhou Asian Games will be held in a newly constructed half-stadium in Haixinsha Square. OSRAM Opto Semiconductors’ OSLON SSL LEDs were chosen to light up the exterior of the venue. These LEDs were used to produce a variety of colours, highlighting the gill-like side openings of the half-stadium, flanked by the city’s UFO-like opera house and the latticed Guangzhou TV Tower.

LED lighting brings uniform illumination to the Zhujiang New City Central Business District (CBD) in the city of Guangzhou in time for the Asian Games in China. On centre stage are OSRAM Opto Semiconductors’ Golden DRAGON Plus LEDs, installed in the street & parking lamps of the Haixinsha People square in Lin Jiang Road where the Asian Games will be unveiled. These LED lamps will provide an evenly illuminated environment for pedestrians and for drivers in the parking lot.

NXP Semiconductors N.V. has promoted two collections of automotive LED driver ICs ASL1010NTK and ASL1010PHN, designed for vehicle LED headlights and tail lights. According to NXP, automotive LEDs have used complex, relatively expensive driver ICs made for generic Solid State Lighting applications that lack many of the critical functions needed for automotive applications.

In a bid to better serve South Korean OLED display and lighting manufacturers , New Jersey based company Universal Display Corporation is setting up a South Korean subsidiary as well as expanding into 'green' markets. 

Visualization specialist Barco has released a new line of LED-lit, DLP-based video walls with an improved LED engine. The new series features an advanced heat management system based on liquid cooling technology, which brings the LED temperature down to the optimal level. This results in a significantly longer lifetime of the projection system, amounting to 80,000 hours of continuous operation in eco-mode – or a 35% improvement over competing video walls.

Energy savings are often the most important factor in new lighting solutions. OSRAM’s Dulux L HE compact fluorescent lamps with plug bases achieve a light output of up to 100 lumens per watt. In addition to that their long operating life means lower maintenance.

Super flat displays are now possible thanks to the new TOPLED Compact 4520 from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors. This LED is one of the smallest for screen backlighting and is the first LED for this application to have a UX:3 chip. It is therefore ideal for pulse mode, can be loaded with a very high current and helps produce razor sharp pictures.

AIXTRON AG has announced a new order for a Black Magic Plasma Enhanced CVD (PECVD) system from DTU Danchip and DTU Nanotech at the Technical University of Denmark in Lyngby, Denmark.

The Power TOPLED SFH4250S from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors emits almost double the infrared light compared to the standard component SFH4250. The new IR-LED achieves a radiant intensity of typically 22 mW/sr and a total radiant flux of 70 mW in continuous operation at 70 mA driving current. With its high radiance the component allows the design of very compact lighting units. In existing designs the effective range can be increased significantly.

It’s reported that Taiwan Delta Electronics has made a contract with Osram for LED light bulbs using chipmaker Epistar `s high-voltage chip, a solution to making LED luminaires adaptable to household 110-220V power outlets.

AIXTRON AG today announced an order from Jiangxi Changda, a new customer in the southern province of PR China. Jiangxi Changda has ordered two AIX 2800G4 HT 2 inch MOCVD tools. The new HB GaN LED growth reactors have been successfully installed and commissioned by the local AIXTRON support team at the company’s facility.

Recently, Oxford Instruments-TDI, has entered into a licensing agreement with The Fox Group. Philips unveiled the new dimmable 12 watt Master LEDbulb, which is considered the industry's first LED replacement for the common 60 watt incandescent light bulb used in New Zealand .  

Philips has launched its 42-inch Econova LED TV, which has acquired the European Green EV 2010-2011 Award given by the European Imaging & Sound Association. The new TV features 40W of power consumption in eco-mode and offers some other eco-friendly credentials such as a solar-powered remote control, e-manual and the use of recycled aluminum panel.

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors has added the OSLON Black Series to its successful OSLON family. The first member of the new series has a metal lead frame, a compact package and a tried and tested lens design. The LED can be used wherever there are large fluctuations in temperature and a large amount of light is needed from a small area.

Eulitha AG, a Swiss based nanolithography company, has developed a proprietary photolithography technology for low-cost and high-throughput fabrication of photonic nanostructures. This solves a major ongoing problem faced in the fabrication of high-resolution photonic structures since standard photolithography equipment either lacks the required resolution or its cost is prohibitively high.
