LEDinside: Demand of Tablet PCs to Improve LED Specification; LED Shipment in 2011 Show Aggressive Growth

Since iPad, Apple’s best selling product, led a trend of Tablet PCs, other manufacturers have accelerated the development and launch of Tablet PCs. LEDinside, a research division under TrendForce, indicated that LED application requirement for Tablet PC has improved, and average brightness specification has increased by over 20 percent compared to before. Additionally, LED shipment grew, too. It is estimated that LED shipment will rise to 1.3 billion in 2011 from 380 million in 2010, around 3.5 times in growth rate.

Unity Opto estimated 2011 revenues to increase by 80% from 2010

With demand LED backlight applications on the rise, Taiwan LED chip packager Unity Opto Technology expected monthly revenues to hit NT$700 billion (US$23.39 million) in 1Q 11. And the Full-year revenues for 2011 were expected to raise 80% to NT$12 billion from 2010.

Sharp to Tap into LED Controllers for Indoor Lighting

It’s reported that Sharp Corporation has designed and will introduce the LR56001 LED controller for LED ceiling lights which can independently control up to three types of LED lights including cool white, warm white, and night light with each at the desired level of brightness. By adjusting the brightness of cool white and warm white lights ,the user is able to change the color emitted, anywhere from a warm red color to a cool light blue color.

Amtran expected 2011 revenues to reach NT$100 billion

Amtran Technology expected its revenues would reach NT$100 billion (US$3.34 billion) in 2011, with subsidiary Raken Technology completing capacity expansion in 2011 and bringing annual revenues to US$3 billion. A leader of the company noted, 4Q10 would be the most profitable period in 2010 following record sales in November and strong performance in December. And it made Amtran overtake Samsung Electronics as the top TV vendor in North America in 3Q, and it is likely to retain its ranking in 4Q.

Formosa Epitaxy's MOCVD would be equipped 126 units in 2011

Recently, Formosa Epitaxy announced the inauguration of its LED chip subsidiary based in Yangzhou, China, which could become China's largest epitaxial wafer maker in 2012 when it completed the installation of 50 MOCVD machines. Formosa Epitaxy chairman noted, the company expected LED chip demand return to the levels of the first half of 2010 in February and March of 2011, and mass shipments for applications in tablet PCs would begin in February as well.

Piccadilly Circus Gets LED Makeover

TDK has used LED technology to upgrade its iconic neon sign at London’s Piccadilly Circus. The LED display which nearly has 100 square metres was jointly created by Barco, project management company MT² and system integrator Beaver Solutions. Barco’s 16mm TF-16BK LED tiles were used for the display. A web-based Scala content management system, supplied by Beaver was also used in the sign.

Renesas Electronics America has released its R2A20134 LED driver IC which can supply high efficiency and a high power factor at low cost for LED lighting applications.   Renesas Electronics’ voltage step-down control technology (single-stage) provides a high line-to-ground voltage. Besides, the ability to select low-voltage MOSFETs (voltage tolerance of only 500 volts (V) to 300 V, rather than the typical 700 V) further contributes to lower system cost.

Epistar、 Formosa and Everlight’s employee bonuses was expected to increase compared to 2009

The full-year revenues for Taiwan-based LED chip maker Epistar was expected to reach NT$20 billion in 2010, up 50% compared to 2009. And Net income for 2010 will range from NT$5.5-6 billion. Meanwhile, the company would take NT$800 million for the employee bonuses, and everyone would receive over NT$200,000 on average, with 3,700 employees. Also, Epistar planed to raise salaries by 8% on average.

African Standard Bank’s LED Retrofit Project in Tanzania

According to a statement from African Standard Bank, it has bought 700,000 UN-backed carbon credits to fund a clean energy project to replace kerosene lamps with LED lamps in 31-million Tanzanian homes. The project, owned by Illumination Tanzania, will save the nation around $200 million (about Sh280 billion). And it will reduce Tanzania’s greenhouse gas emissions by 800,000 tonnes.
