Recently, LG’s LED lighting and Plasma Lighting System (PLS) products has received official certifications from European, Chinese, Japanese and Korean governments for energy efficiency, quality, safety and eco-friendliness. Based on these certifications, LG will kick off a global roll-out of its newest green business initiative as a total lighting solution provider.

Lattice Power Corporation announced a $55.5 million new financing led by IFC, a member of the World Bank Group. The signing ceremony was held at China World Hotel in Beijing on December 8th, 2010. Chinese venture capital firm ,WI Harper Group, announced that SemiLEDs made its 5.3 million shares of initial public offering on the Nasdaq Global Market exchange with the ticker symbol of LEDS. SemiLEDs’ initial public offering was priced at $17 each, and increased 52% in value on opening day. SemiLEDs posted a profit of $10.8 million for the year ending August 31, 2010 based on $35.8 million in revenue.

SAP, the provider of business software(*) and a sustainability pioneer, has chose Redwood Systems’s products to maximize the performance and functionality of SAP Labs U.S.’s LED installation in Palo Alto, Calif. It’s reported that SAP’s strong commitment to sustainability drives their plans to adopt 337 LED fixtures in Palo Alto for combined gains in performance, quality, longevity and efficiency.

AIXTRON AG has announced a new order for a Black Magic Plasma Enhanced CVD (PECVD) system from Graphenea SL, a start-up company based within the facilities of nanoGUNE in San Sebastian city, in the Basque region of Spain.  Graphenea’s focus is in developing graphene-based process technology for electronic devices.

A leader of Chimei noted, the total LCD TVs’ sales would be 1.18 million units in Taiwan in 2010, and it’s expected to over 1.25 million in 2011, with LED TVs having a 30-35% share. Chimei was expected to ship 175,000 LCD TVs in the Taiwan market in 2010, up 16% from 2009 .In 2011, the company planed to ship 200,000 units, with LED backlight models accounting for over 40% of total shipments and aiming to account for 20% share in the Taiwan market.

Taiwan-based Global Brands Manufacture (GBM) would set up a production base for the manufacture of PCB and PCB assembly (PCBA) locally, and recently it had signed an investment MOU with the government of Chongqing City, western China. GBM focused on the motherboard, notebook and HDD markets, and extended its market reach to automotive and LED lighting products.

SEMI noted that fab spending would increase about 18.3% in 2011 and about 9.5% in 2012, with the ongoing technology upgrades and continued capacity growth, especially in LED segment. In 2011, the spending on construction projects would decrease about 11% and in 2012 it would become much less due to a currently uncertain outlook for new fab construction starts. But it estimated that spending on fab equipment would rise 23% to about US$40 billion in 2011.

LCD monitor vendors noted that LED-backlit monitor sales had improved in the second half of 2010, with the price gap between LED and CCFL models narrowed and more LED sets were available. It’s estimated that in 4Q LED-backlit models’ sales would account for 50% of the total monitor sales in Taiwan.

LED chipmaker Epistar November revenues decreased to NT$1.663 billion (US$55.161 million), down 2.8% sequentially but up 26.4% from 2009. Revenues from January through November grew 60.16% on year to NT$18.327 million.

QD Vision, an MIT spinoff, has announced a display technology based on quantum dots, which can be easier to manufacture than OLEDs and it is even brighter and more energy-efficient. Quantum dots are nanometer-sized semiconducting crystals that can shine a bright, spectrally pure color when exposed to either light (photoluminescence) or electrical current (electroluminescence).

According to a report from China Daily, the mainland's first company Visionox which manufactures OLED panels and Tsinghua University have jointly made up a research team to develop a proprietary technology to prolong the life time of OLED.

California-based decorative furnishings company Light Energy Studio has designed a new Light Energy LED Cocktail Tables studded with different colour changing RGB LED Lighting to change the entire look of the room, especially when it is dark. The light effects can be controlled via controllers which come with each table. Different colour changing LEDs offer different illumination effects. It is available in a choice of black, white, or brushed aluminium finish.

Reportedly, Epson has selected Cypress Semiconductor’s CapSense® capacitive touch solution to implement buttons and LED controls in its new Epson Artisan 725, Stylus Photo PX720WD, Stylus Photo TX720WD, and Stylus Photo PX660 multi-function printers. These printers have a unique control panel with LEDs that intuitively guide users through common tasks. They feature wireless and wired connectivity and automatic double-sided printing to save paper.

Acuity Brands has introduced the Lithonia Lighting® RTLED™ 2’x4’ and 1’x4’ luminaire models . The RTLED family of volumetric recessed luminaires, which are factory-enabled with Acuity Brands’ nLight™ intelligent controls interface, deliver high-quality ambient white light for general illumination applications while reducing energy consumption, maintenance costs and a building’s environmental footprint.

It’s reported that Coretronic entered the supply chain for the second generation iPad, and would supply BLUs to Chimei Innolux (CMI) and LG Display. But Coretronic had declined to comment. In the end of 1Q11, the second generation iPad was expected to hit the market and it’s estimated that suppliers in the supply chain started to ship in 1Q11.

US-based sapphire wafer manufacturer Rubicon Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: RBCN) was enjoying sapphire wafers for the LED market price increasing and was paying more attention to own production capacity. In 3Q10, Rubicon's overall revenue grew by 30% sequentially to $20.5 million. Only in the LED market alone, revenue was $19.4 million, up 39% compared with $14 million in 2Q.

According to a recent statement from Philips’ subsidiary Assembleon, Philips has agree to sell 80 percent of Assembleon to independent private equity firm H2 Equity Partners.

Chinese conglomerate Jin Hui Holdings have developed a partnership with LED International joint venture Strongbase New Shenzhen for energy saving solutions. According to an energy management contract, the JV will complete the installation of LED energy saving light bulbs. Strongbase New Shenzhen is a JV between LED's wholly-owned subsidiary, LED International Energy Conservation Holdings, and So Hing Chung, Ip Po Kwong, Hui Shun and Yung Chiu Hong.

Taiwan-based LED manufacture Xodtec LED, Inc. has announced an automatic LED street lighting management system that is designed to monitor thousands of LED street lights which are connected to a central management system and embedded with its intelligent surveillance and management functions. At present, it is installing the intelligent LED street lighting management system in Yangzhou, China, and will complete the function test in December 2010.

GE has developed a 9-watt GE Energy Smart® LED bulb to replace a 40-watt incandescent bulb in desk, bedside or hallway lamps, as the first standard incandescent shaped (A-line) LED bulb to earn an ENERGY STAR® rating.   The GE Energy Smart® 9-watt LED has a unique fin-like design, allowing it to direct light downward on the intended surface and all around, not just out the top of the lampshade.

In Taiwan market, industry sources thought that  LED backlit LCD monitors’ market penetration had increased rapidly,with the price gap over CCFL models narrowed and LCD monitor shipments in 2010 was going up to 1.3 million units. For example, the price gap between 22-inch LED and CCFL models has narrowed to NT$300, and about NT$100-150 for the 19-inch segment. So the source noted that  in Taiwan market in 2010  22-inch LED backlit widescreen LCD monitors would replace CCFL models and 19-inch widescreen products as the industry mainstream.

Wellypower Optronics reported NT$807 million (US$26.78 million) in November 2010 consolidated revenues, up 5.66% sequentially, in which Taiwan company's LED chip packaging and CCFL businesses contributed NT$429 million and NT$340 million, respectively, to represent 53.18% and 42.24% of November revenues.
