Cooper Lighting Supports City of Virginia Beach for LED Lighting Retrofit

In a bid to reduce energy, maintenance costs, as well as improve lighting quality, the city of Virginia Beach, Virginia has selected Cooper Lighting for the interior and exterior LED lighting upgrades to its Virginia Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau. On the exterior, Cooper Lighting McGraw-Edison Concise LED Canopy fixtures, Talon LED Area Luminaires, and Lumark LED Wal-Pak fixtures will illuminate the building and parking lot.

Cree and Habitat for Humanity Complete World’s First All-LED Habitat Home

This past weekend, Cree, Inc. (Nasdaq: CREE) and Habitat for Humanity of Durham celebrated the completion of the world’s first Habitat for Humanity house lit entirely with LED fixtures and bulbs. Durham-based LED manufacturer Cree sponsored the construction of the Habitat house and Cree employees assisted as volunteers on the project. The house includes Cree’s award-winning CR6™ LED downlight, as well as other LED products featuring Cree LEDs from MSi and TESS (Top Energy Saving System Corp.).

Recently, SemiLEDs Corporation (NASDAQ: LEDS) was listed for transactions on the NASDAQ Global Select Market, with the symbol “LEDS.” The company’s IPO (initial public offering) was priced $17.00 per share with 5,250,000 shares. The company develops and manufactures LED chips including blue, green and ultraviolet (UV) LED, and LED components, which were primarily for general lighting applications, such as street lights and commercial, industrial and residential lighting.

Some Taiwan LED companies strengthened their development on the LED lighting segment, as LED lighting market was expected to increase about 50% in 2011 by industry sources. Epistar estimated that the ratio of LED lighting products to its total production would grow up to 30% in 2011 from 20% in 2010, while Tekcore and Formosa Epitaxy both were expected to add ratios to 30% in 4Q10.

The E90 has a response time of just 2 milliseconds, which can remains clear and bright even during fast-moving action sequences. Chinese venture capital firm ,WI Harper Group, announced that SemiLEDs made its 5.3 million shares of initial public offering on the Nasdaq Global Market exchange with the ticker symbol of LEDS. SemiLEDs’ initial public offering was priced at $17 each, and increased 52% in value on opening day. SemiLEDs posted a profit of $10.8 million for the year ending August 31, 2010 based on $35.8 million in revenue.

A leader of Chimei noted, the total LCD TVs’ sales would be 1.18 million units in Taiwan in 2010, and it’s expected to over 1.25 million in 2011, with LED TVs having a 30-35% share. Chimei was expected to ship 175,000 LCD TVs in the Taiwan market in 2010, up 16% from 2009 .In 2011, the company planed to ship 200,000 units, with LED backlight models accounting for over 40% of total shipments and aiming to account for 20% share in the Taiwan market.

LED fab spending is becoming more and more

SEMI noted that fab spending would increase about 18.3% in 2011 and about 9.5% in 2012, with the ongoing technology upgrades and continued capacity growth, especially in LED segment. In 2011, the spending on construction projects would decrease about 11% and in 2012 it would become much less due to a currently uncertain outlook for new fab construction starts. But it estimated that spending on fab equipment would rise 23% to about US$40 billion in 2011.
