Philips' new CEO will go on with the former leader's five-year stategy

According to Royal Philips Electronics, its current CEO Gerard Kleisterlee, will step down in April 2011 and will be replaced by Frans van Houten, a former Chief Executive of Philips' semiconductor business NXP, and van Houten will continue to build on the Dutch company's current strategy, seeking to benefit from an aging population, growth in emerging markets and increased awareness of energy efficiency.

AIXTRON gains CRIUS® follow-up order from Long De Xin for GaN HB blue LED production

AIXTRON AG has announced today a new order for two further CRIUS® 31x2-inch configuration deposition systems from Long De Xin. A company based in the PR China, Long De Xin placed the order during the second quarter of 2010 with both systems scheduled for shipment in the third quarter of 2010. They will be used for the manufacture of GaN ultra-high brightness (UHB) blue LEDs. The local AIXTRON support team will commission the new reactors at the new Long De Xin facility at their mainland China production plant.

The selling price of Sapphire substrates to be up US$30 in 4Q10 due to Supply disconnected

Following the contuse lacing of Sapphire substrates, some LED manufactures thought its price would be over US$30 in 4Q10, so they start making purchase on Sapphire substrates with cash. In Q1 of 2010, 2-inch sapphire substrates offering price was not enough US$15, but up straightly to US$25-30 in Q 3, and recently has been to US$30-35. To prevent idle production lines, some LED chipmakers had to begun price negotiation for Q4, while Some LED chipmakers had halted production lines and moved back delivery of MOCVD machines.

Inventory Preparation for Christmas Hot Season to Help Reviving LED Industry

Based on the industry researcher LEDinside's analysis and statistics, in August 2010, listed LED manufacturers in Taiwan reported total revenue of NTD 10.593 billion, posting a 2.4% decline, compared with revenue of NTD 10.853 billion in July and a rise of 64% YoY. The revenue for LED chip manufacturers in August reached NTD 4.89 billion, down by 1.6% from July. The revenue for LED package manufacturers in August amounted to NTD 5.70 billion, down by 3% from July. The constant increasing momentum in revenue for nearly half a year ended in August in the LED industry.

SETI teamed up with Kyma Technologies to develop deep UV LEDs and optoelectronics

US Sensor Electronic Technology Inc (SETI)has teamed up with semiconductor materials supplier Kyma Technologies to create low-defect AlGaN substrates for use in next-generation deep UV LEDs and optoelectronics. SETI used deep UV LEDs in high-power applications such as water disinfection, with the company having recently created a prototype all-LED based portable water disinfection system.

Autocue exhibits lighting kits and entry-level tripods at IBC 2010

American Autocue, the home of QTV teleprompters, will exhibit a range of LED and softbox lighting kits and its first ever tripod at IBC 2010. It's said that Autocue's dimmable 1000 and 500 LED lights ($749 and $399 respectively) and stands ($49) can be used in any combination to make up the ideal entry-level lighting kit. For softer lighting, there is a 3-head softbox lighting kit including case and 12 fluorescent bulbs for $249. There is also an on-camera, 120 LED light, ideal for mobile shoots, for $149.

Led by the Minister without Portfolio J.F. Chang of the Executive Yuan, Taiwan’s Cabinet, a delegation of over 60 executives from 20 Taiwanese high-tech manufacturers recently set out for the United States to hunt for talents in Silicon Valley and Boston. It mainly recruited specialists in six sectors including photovoltaic, optoelectronics, materials, and biotech. Delegation members planned to offer a total of 1,200 jobs covering R&D specialists, market researchers, market managers, and accountants.

Arima Optoelectronics will establish new LED factory in Jiangsu and will get RMB 1.5 billion subsidy

 A few days ago, LED epitaxial wafer and chip maker Arima Optoelectronics planed to establish LED Mark Bray silicon wafer factory in the name of Arima Optoelectronics Jiangsu in Wujiang ,and Arima Opto owed a wholly shareholding with US$30 million investment. In order to expand blue light LED productivity, the company also had set another new factory in Changzhi city. Now the factory has been built, which are expected to import 15 MOCVD before the end of 2010, reaching 30 MOCVD in 2011.

Panasonic predicts Edge LED is the way forward for the LCD market

Accoring to Japanese electronics manufacturer Panasonic , instead of LED sets, edge-lit LED TVs will become the standard for LCD sets. Panasonic's technical marketing manager Markus Wagenseil,pointed out that compared to slimmer and cheaper sets using edge-mounted LEDs, direct LED technology will prove to be too expensive to be sustainable. In additon, direct LED sets require many more LEDs to be mounted than the alternative option, which will prove a disadvantage due to a market shortage of electronic components.

Skyworth plans to cut LED TV prices to promote the sale

According to the Chairman and President of China TV manufacturer Skyworth Zhang Xuebin, Skyworth is planned to cut the prices of LED flat-panel televisions in the next six months to promote the sales. Zhang added that Chinese TV producers cut prices of about 25% in old TV models between April and June.
