Luminus Devices Inc., announced that its PT-39 chipset is powering Acer's K11 second generation DLP projector, which is the world’s smallest 200 lm projector. Then the K10 projector, the K11 offers twice the performance in 12.2 x 11.6 mm2, and weight 0.61 Kg.
The K11 is compatible with iPhones/iPads, supports USB media sources, High Definition multimedia devices and includes a built-in card reader for fast media sharing.

This year’s Welker Award was conferred at the 37th International Symposium on Compound Semiconductors – ISCS – in Takamatsu, Japan. The prize inaugurated in 1976 and sponsored by OSRAM is awarded for exceptional research conducted in the field of compound semiconductors. This year, the award goes to Pallab K. Bhattacharya, professor at the University of Michigan, for his pioneering work on photonic devices, which are based on III-V compound semiconductors.

Edward Smalley, director of the newly formed DOE Municipal Solid-state Street Lighting Consortium, in a one-on-one interview subsequent to the DOE webcast, initiated the discussion of controls and the potential for additional energy savings. Smalley stated, the reason for the consortium is to get these other municipalities up to speed." And Smalley meant up to speed both on LED lighting and the advantages afforded by controls.

Mitsubishi Electric has completed installation of a 17m x 7m Diamond Vision LED screen that will serve as the main display at Hakodate Racecourse, Japan, on June 19, 2010.
The main display system features high brightness LEDs aligned in a 10 mm dot pitch. The split-screen display can simultaneously showcase two screens of content, such as live footage of a race or the paddock on one screen and race odds and other data on the other.

AIXTRON AG announced today a new order from an existing customer in China. The order is for two CRIUS production deposition systems in a 31x2 inch configuration. LED manufacturer Xi An ZoomView placed the order in the fourth quarter of 2009, and will use both reactors for GaN HB-LED production. The systems will be delivered over the second to third quarter period of 2010 with the local AIXTRON support team installing and commissioning the new reactors at the company’s new production facility.

The new emitters use Philips' latest thin film flip chip (TFFC) and proprietary Lumiramic phosphor technologies. At the high operating temperatures found in applications like recessed lamps, the new emitters set efficacy benchmarks.

Chinese Yangzhou Zhongke Semiconductor Lighting Center Co. Ltd has ordered two CRIUS 31x2-inch configuration deposition systems from AIXTRON AG.
Zhongke placed the order in the fourth quarter of 2009 and after delivery in the second quarter of 2010 they will be used for GaN high brightness LED production for streetlight and display backlighting applications. The local AIXTRON support team will commission the new reactors at the facility within the company’s research group, ISCAS, in China.
