DOE Releases GATEWAY Report on LED Freezer Case Lighting

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has published the final report from a demonstration retrofit of light-emitting diode (LED) freezer case lighting in an Albertsons Grocery store in Eugene, Oregon. This GATEWAY demonstration report provides an overview of project results including lighting performance, economic performance, and potential energy savings. In this project, upright freezer cases were retrofitted with LED striplights combined with occupancy sensors, and compared against standard fluorescent lighting on the opposite side of the aisle. Sun Valleys to Light Up 2010 World Expo

2010 World Expo will be held from 1 May to 31 October next year in Shanghai, China. Sun Valley is one of a six giant funnel-shaped canopies that are currently springing up in preparation for the event. Dialight Signs Second Agreement with US Telecom Tower Operator for LED White Strobe Technology

Applied LED lighting technology specialist Dialight Plc. today announced that an agreement has been signed with a second major US telecom tower operator, for its LED white strobe technology. The commitment from the operator is to use Dialight’s unique LED technology for all new towers, all light replacements and repairs. Initial shipments have already commenced and the agreement will continue through at least the end of 2010.

Seoul Semiconductor, NGL Supply Make 1000 Free Light Bulbs Available Through the World Usability Day Project Website

The World Usability Day (WUD) project will make 1,000 LED spot/bulbs available for free via their website www.worldusabilityday.org. "Assume the following math: 1,000 bulbs can replace all of the light bulbs in 20 medium-sized houses," said Brian Sullivan, the usability principal at the Sabre Human Factors Center in San Francisco, CA, and co-chair of World Usability Day. "The LED bulbs are easily three times more efficient than standard bulbs. So that is the equivalent of lighting 100 houses," said Brian Sullivan, co-chair of World Usability Day.

Scients Developed Inexpensive LED Lighting with Solar Cells

Scientists at the Risø National Laboratory for Sustainable Energy in Denmark have developed an inexpensive way to integrate solar cells, LEDs, and ultrathin lithium batteries to create a lamp that can produce reading-quality light. The lamp's polymer solar cells and circuitry are printed onto large flexible plastic films, and the LEDs, flat batteries, and diodes are mounted using silver epoxy. After being encapsulated in a second sheet of film, the sheets are rolled up and snapped together at the corners with metal fasteners.
