GM to Incorporate Daytime LEDs into More Cars

GM will use LED daytime running lights as a way to add visual distinction to its vehicles, according to a conversation Car and Driver’s Steve Siler had with Jim Federico, GM’s vehicle line executive for midsize cars like the Chevy Malibu and Cadillac CTS. The LEDs appear in the new Buick LaCrosse and give the headlamps an opportunity to distinguish GM products. It’s a design strategy that can be seen on most Audis, and will now be a trend across GM’s four remaining brands.

Seoul Semiconductor Expands Sales of High-efficiency Bulb (GU10) Using Acriche

Elgo, one of Europe’s lighting companies, shows good sales activity of bulbs using Acriche. In addition, Acriche is used in solid state lighting products manufactured by Molex, a global leading electronics manufacturer. Products from Molex will be available in the third quarter of this year. Seoul Semiconductor is expected to make serious inroads into the GU10 market which consists of about 300 million bulbs per year and is worth approximately 1.2 billion dollars.

Venture Capitals Bullish about Energy Efficient Lighting

Some venture capital firms in the U.S. are glowing about energy efficient lighting companies and they are investing large sums of money in this sector, according to an article on Wall Street Journal. New York-based Braemar Energy Ventures and San Francisco-based VantagePoint Venture Partners are both targeting $50 million of investments at energy efficient lighting companies currently. And VantagePoint may increase that amount by another $50 million within the next year.

Allegeny County Jail Implements ALSI's LED Lighting to Reduce Costs, Improve Security

The Challenge The Allegheny County Jail, a 900,000 square foot Pennsylvania facility that opened in 1996, faced expensive power and maintenance costs associated with outdated lighting in the jail’s 35 inmate housing pods, and elsewhere in the facility. The jail also faced a security issue because the light fixtures hung from the ceiling in a manner that blocked some security camera views. The existing lights were 2x2 High Intensity Discharge fixtures (HID), using a 250 W metal halide lamp, with additional ballast wattage of 45 W.

New Mexico, U.S., to Switch to LEDs at Intersections

The New Mexico Department of Transportation will start replacing incandescent lighting at intersections throughout the state with LEDs to save money and energy. The department says the work will begin Monday. Some 380 intersections will be upgraded with the new lighting. The Transportation Department signed a contract with the state Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department to do the work. EMNRD received a $5 million grant through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for the project.

Reuters: Cree "Cautiously Optimistic" on Demand Growth, Could Tap Debt Market

Cree Inc is "cautiously optimistic" that demand for its products will pick up in the coming months, and it could tap the debt markets to help fund its growth, said Cree’s CEO Chuck Swoboda in an interview with Reuters on Tuesday. With no outstanding debt and more than $400 million in cash, Cree is not currently planning a debt issuance, but it would be better to issue debt before the company was in need of cash, said Swoboda.
