Researchers at the University of Connecticut have made a new material that emits bright white light by adding fluorescent dyes to DNA and then spinning the DNA strands into nanofibers, according to a paper published online in the journal Angewandte Chemie. The researchers create white-light-emitting devices by coating ultraviolet (UV) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with the material. They are even able to fine-tune the white color tone to make it warm or cold.

City officials say that the city has received a 50 thousand dollar grant for it to switch to new LED lights in different parts of the city. LEDs use less energy, last longer and are more environmentally friendly. So far, they've been installed at the water plant, and at the adult detention center.

New York-based Braemar Energy Ventures and San Francisco-based VantagePoint Venture Partners are both targeting $50 million of investments at energy efficient lighting companies currently. And VantagePoint may increase that amount by another $50 million within the next year.

The Challenge
The Allegheny County Jail, a 900,000 square foot Pennsylvania facility that opened in 1996, faced expensive power and maintenance costs associated with outdated lighting in the jail’s 35 inmate housing pods, and elsewhere in the facility. The jail also faced a security issue because the light fixtures hung from the ceiling in a manner that blocked some security camera views. The existing lights were 2x2 High Intensity Discharge fixtures (HID), using a 250 W metal halide lamp, with additional ballast wattage of 45 W.
