I-Chiun Precision Industry Co., Ltd., a global supplier of LED (light-emitting diode) light guide frames, announced that it has established a joint venture with the Chinese American tycoon Jeffery Wu, a major shareholder of United International Bank of the U.S., to explore the LED lighting market in the U.S., according to a report in Taiwan Economic News.

Lagotek Corporation, a developer of residential and commercial building automation systems, today announced an agreement with Advanced Control Technologies (ACT), a leader in the development of wired and wireless residential and commercial control products.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation will start replacing incandescent lighting at intersections throughout the state with LEDs to save money and energy. The department says the work will begin Monday. Some 380 intersections will be upgraded with the new lighting. The Transportation Department signed a contract with the state Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department to do the work. EMNRD received a $5 million grant through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for the project.

GlacialTech Inc. is launching star-bright environmentally friendly LED spotlights. The GL-SP30 LED high brightness spotlight  consumes no more than 38W of power and will replace traditional Halogen lamps which usually consume in excess of  300W per lamp. In London, LED lighting has been introduced to replace the conventional lighting at all of the city’s roadside ticket machines, reducing 75 per cent of the energy consumption, according to Transport for London (TfL).

UPEC Electronics Corp. introduced their new product – CP150 series, which used Aluminum oxide to replace for original LTCC package materials. Utilizing UPEC’s superior ceramic packing technology for high power LED, CP150 is packed with the smallest size and still can keep excellent thermal conductivity and higher CTE (coefficient of thermal expansion). Intematix Corp., a leading innovator in phosphors, LED components and solid state lighting modules announced today that it has completed a pan-European franchise agreement with Rutronik Elektronische Bauelemente GmbH. The agreement provides Rutronik distribution rights to Intematix' entire product portfolio of chip-on-ceramic power LEDs, arrays and modules. Rutronik will also have access to Intematix full-solution line of control systems, secondary optics and heat management technologies.

Cree Inc is "cautiously optimistic" that demand for its products will pick up in the coming months, and it could tap the debt markets to help fund its growth, said Cree’s CEO Chuck Swoboda in an interview with Reuters on Tuesday. With no outstanding debt and more than $400 million in cash, Cree is not currently planning a debt issuance, but it would be better to issue debt before the company was in need of cash, said Swoboda.

GlacialTech Inc. is launching a new range of environmentally friendly Green LED spotlights. The GL-SP15 Series comes in various models, ranging from an Infra red sensor driven light, to a CCD camera option. Both products will consume no more than 21W of power and will replace traditional Halogen lamps which usually consume in excess of 150W per lamp. The lifespan of these LED lamps is 35,000hrs, whereas the halogen spotlight lasts for 3,000hrs only. The predicted savings rate is 86% when compared with Halogen spotlights.

For the third quarter ended March 29, LED products maker Cree reported earnings of $4.0 million, compared with $5.7 million in the year-ago period, which is above market estimates. And the company has forecasted stronger-than-expected revenue for the fourth quarter.

Taiwan government has got plan to invest in the new energy industry and to develop it into another industry with annual output value exceeding NT$1 trillion, according to the Flagship Plan For The New Energy Industry which is scheduled to be launched by the Cabinet on April 23. Photovoltaic and LED lighting will be stressed as two mainstays in the industry.

In spite of the global economic downturn, demand for LED lighting will continue growing in the next year, forecasted Cree CEO Chuck Swoboda in a Tuesday interview with Reuters.

Everlight signed a non-exclusive cross-license agreement with OSRAM GmbH (“OSRAM”), providing the companies (including wholly-owned affiliates) with access in certain areas to each other’s patented LED technology.

It’s reported that The Schenectady Museum & Suits-Bueche Planetarium has added new LED bulbs from Marktech LED Lighting of Lathem, New York in the Museum's Broughton Gallery. In order to improve its energy consumption and to enhance the appearance of exhibits in the gallery the Museum has installed fifty new 12W LED Bulbs. The new solid-state PAR30 LED Bulbs were used to replace outdated incandescent track lighting that had been previously used to light the section of the Museum.

As environmental protection becomes an issue of increasing concern, energy-saving policies have been brought forward continually by Chinese government. According to LEDinside, the LED industry may benefit from the RMB 4 trillion economy stimulus funds planned to be devoted before the end of 2010. And the EXPO 2010 in Shanghai will also bring out another LED demand high tide after the Beijing Olympic Games 2008.

LED lamps were compared to other technologies in a recent issue of National Geographic magazine, and LED lighting was also discussed in the House of Commons, the UK’s legislative chamber, on March 5 as part of a debate on energy and climate change. Joan Ruddock, Under-Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, was asked if there had been discussions between her department and the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) on the effect on electricity consumption and CO2 emissions of the installation and use of LED lighting.

Recently, Advanced LEDs Ltd of UK announced that it has completed two LED projects in Dubai. The projects include the Dubai Mall, with more than 1,200 stores, and the 360m-high Burj Dubai Lake Tower Hotel next door.

Mircon, based in Boise, Idaho, is asking for $20 to $100 million of the more than $1 billion of stimulus money the Gem State will be receiving. The company is proposing to start manufacturing solar panels and high efficiency lighting components at it's now idle factories in Nampa and Boise, employing hundreds of people.
