Soraa, the world leader in GaN on GaN™ LED technology, announced that its LED lamps have been installed at the Pitt Rivers Museum at the University of Oxford in Oxford, England. The museum chose Soraa’s LED lamps to save energy and money and to illuminate its rare collections of anthropology and archaeology artifacts.

In the 4.5 mile stretch connecting 10 neighborhoods within the city of Charlotte, North Carolina (USA), city officials and businesses have been joining forces to create an urban park along the light rail tracks. Known as the rail trail, this linear park draws visitors and commuters from all of the surrounding areas. The goal is to make it more than simply a way to get from point A to point B – it should become a destination in and of itself.

Internationally acclaimed Japanese artist Tatsuo Miyajima presented his new large-scale installation Time Waterfall during this year's Art Basel in Hong Kong. The work was shown across the entire façade of the city's iconic 490-meter-high International Commerce Centre on the Kowloon harbour-front. The installation will be on display until the end of April.

As part of a $1 billion investment designed to improve its entire portfolio of 629 properties, Extended Stay America ("ESA") recently began improving the exterior lighting at many of its facilities. From a lighting perspective, the technology used to illuminate the buildings, parking lots and common areas were outdated by almost 20 years. Etihad ESCO, the energy retrofit entity has executed the lighting retrofit project at the DEWA power stations in Jebel Ali and Al Awir. The project involved replacing 8,500 light fixtures with high efficiency LEDs and it has exceeded the contractual savings guarantee to 75% savings from initial electricity consumption, which is equivalent to a 15 GWh reduction annually.

Due to their round-the-clock operation and high lumen output requirements, hospitals devote a great deal of their energy usage to lighting. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, lighting can account for 44% of a hospital’s electricity bill – nearly double that of a commercial building’s. In this light, it is no surprise that hospitals in many parts of the world are updating their lighting systems to LEDs to reduce their operating costs.

The German Ski Association and the lighting manufacturer Osram have drawn a positive summary of their first season as partners. In this alliance, the German Ski Association applied the latest findings about “biologically effective light” to tap the performance reserves of athletes. The energizing effect of light was effectively used in particular for competitions held at night, overseas and in the Far East. “In world-class sport, we have reached a plateau where it is becoming increasingly difficult for athletes to reach an even higher level of performance. By applying knowledge about biologically effective light, we have been able to mobilize new energy reserves,” said Karlheinz Waibel, the national trainer for science and technology at the German Ski Association. Osram biologist Andreas Wojtysiak added: “We will systematically apply the knowledge we have gained in our partnership and develop new ways to boost the performance of world-class athletes.”

The CLUE has unveiled the three winners of its International Lighting Design Contest, held this year under the theme Lightius Loci. Mr. YeonHo Lee from Seoul, South Korea and his team (WooSeok Jang, DongGyun Ha), have won the first prize of $5,000 for their project DMZ: N38˚; the second prize of $2,500 was awarded to Mrs. Maria-Chrysoula Akrivou from Athens, Greece and her team (Antonis Athanasiou) for Lightening a modern odyssey; and the third prize of $1,000 was awarded to Mrs. Verbeek Kara from Vancouver, Canada, for Salmon Run.

Power management company Eaton today announced that the home field of the Vanderbilt University men’s baseball team, Hawkins Field in Nashville, Tennessee, has installed an advanced light-emitting diode (LED) system designed to enhance the viewing experiences for spectators while reducing energy use by as much as 75 percent.

Can you really walk through a rainbow? Yes, in Aarhus, Denmark, on top of the roof of the Danish Art Museum ARoS, to be precise, where renowned artist Olafur Eliasson has implemented a spectacular installation: a 150-meter circular walkway titled “Your rainbow panorama”. Visitors to the rainbow ring located at a height of 50 meters can enjoy a breath-taking 360° view of the harbour town. The daylight filtering through the curved glass walls in all colours of the spectrum, each of them specifically made for this purpose, creates the impression of being inside a rainbow. For the installation to be visible also at night, Eliasson relied on Zumtobel, his long-term partner in lighting: from dusk till dawn, a specially developed lighting solution incorporating 116 recessed uplights installed along the inner periphery of the ring transforms the white ceiling into a source of light, so that the panoramic walkway appears like a rainbow hovering above the museum.
